The Ecobee4 shows major improvements over the predecessor. But, why do you need it in the first place? Costing around $200, many would wonder why people want it so bad. Well, it’s a thermostat for saving energy. It still retains essential features of the older model, but the new ones are also worth checking out. Schedules are an old feature that’s still present in this device. With this, you can adjust the temperature inside the house. As a result, you will no longer waste electricity because it can accurately detect when the interior is too hot or cold. It will make necessary adjustments to keep the owner comfortable. The HVAC system doesn’t need to be on all the time as it is power-consuming. Another interesting feature is Modes, which allows you to change settings quickly. They are like shortcuts to predetermined settings. There are 4 to choose from, namely Vacation, Sleep, Away, and Home.

Design

The Ecobee4 is still recognizable partly because it maintains the same design language as the previous model. The face is rounded and wrapped in black. Meanwhile, the touch screen is located in the middle. But if you take a closer look, you will notice that there’s a blue LED bar on top. It will emit light when Alexa is activated. Most of the interface remains unchanged. The current temperature still looks obtrusive, but in a good way. And then, there is also a slider on one side that you can use to change the thermostat’s temperature settings. The microphone can be found at the bottom next to other indicators. Remember that the device is Alexa-based, so a mic is required to activate it.

Sensors

The Ecobee4 comes in handy since it takes less than 15 minutes to set up. Not just that, Smart Sensors make the thermostat even more functional. The remote sensors allow you to properly heat every room in the house. Note that rooms usually have varying temperatures at any given time, so this will be useful. It can accommodate up to 32, anyway. A set consisting of 2 sensors costs $79. You can estimate how much to spend by counting the number of sensors you need. (Also read: Amazon Echo Dot Review)

They can also detect the presence of the homeowner. When you’re away, these sensors would automatically switch to the most suitable mode. What about the Alexa? It works well just like any other device with this voice assistant. However, the responses are also influenced by the quality of the mic. Thankfully, the Ecobee4 has a quality one that picks up voice without you having to yell. The sensitivity is also high, which means it can work in a large room. The Alexa will respond as soon as she figures out the instructions or questions.

Geofencing

Thermostats are not the only type of devices that use Geofencing. GPS trackers also have this feature on board. Geofencing works by tracking the location of a Smartphone connected to a smart device. In this case, the thermostat will frequently detect your location to see how close you are to the house. If it is moving closer or has entered the predetermined area, the Ecobee4 will change to Home mode. The same applies if you go away from home, it will switch to Away mode once the connected device is no longer inside the Geofenced area.
