Gaming laptops are usually expensive. If you need one that brings a lot of bang for the buck, then the Lenovo Legion Y720 should be considered. This belongs to the mid-range category, but it can catch up to others with higher prices tags. At $1,050, the laptop is value for money. It will meet the needs of the average gamer.

Design

A 15-inch screen is more than enough for an enjoyable gaming experience. Gaming laptops are known for their quirky looks. They have unique styling cues that set them apart from professional laptops. The Lenovo Legion Y720 isn’t any different. It’s ruggedized with defined lines all around. Sure, there are many others that have more unusual designs, but it still meets the criteria of a gaming laptop. The building quality is solid and pretty bulky, too. Don’t expect a gaming laptop to be lightweight because it was never the primary intention. People expect high specs from these devices, not slim designs.

The exterior is black with beautiful red accents. The Legion logo is attached to the hood and it’s backlit, which further boosts its appeal. The body is made of a metal and soft plastic mixture. It is a perfect combination for strength and flexibility. Another awesome part is the hinge. It doesn’t make a crack noise and rotates smoothly. The top is nicely-arranged, while at the bottom, there’s a lot going on because it not only houses the air-intake grills, but also the sub-woofer.

Display

The 15.6-inch FHD display features anti-glare. While the colors are pretty good, the screen feels like it’s not bright enough. When it is used to play games that show dark areas like caves, we can barely see anything unless there is enough light coming through. It covers 66 percent of sRGB, not quite high if you ask. Color accuracy aside, it is still a decent display. We must remember that the Y720 is pretty affordable for a gaming laptop, so it can’t excel in all areas. The thin bezels make the display stand out, which is a good thing. The resolution is at 4K. It looks detailed, but the glossiness can be distracting when there is plenty of light around. Set to a lower resolution if you notice serious lag while playing games. We think the the GTX 1060 can still handle 1080p very well.

Performance

Lenovo Legion Y720 is offered in different configurations. You can pick one with core i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of RAM. Higher end configurations are clearly more powerful, but they are also pricier. Meanwhile, the internal storage amounts to 128GB PCIe SSD and 1TB 5400RPM HDD. With these specs, the laptop can handle graphics-intensive games. However, it does get hot under an extended heavy load. Lenovo tries to overcome this issue by adding a feature they call as ‘Extreme Cooling’. Through benchmark tests it’s revealed that the laptop is capable of running the Witcher 3. It is a good indicator of its performance because many pricier laptops can’t handle it as good.
