The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro is a professional-grade laptop which has similarities to many flagships like the MacBook air. Back in 2016, the first Xiaomi laptop was introduced and it reminded us a lot to the Air. And now, the company takes aim at Apple once again with its new release, the Mi Notebook Pro. It is hard to not draw a comparison since there are many comparable aspects between the two. The new notebook has a 15.6-inch display and an Intel Core i7 processor. With this combination, it’s clear that the Mi Pro is a substantial upgrade from the older model. It is also expected to be much more powerful. Design-aside, the Pro packs a number of cool features, one of which is a fingerprint sensor built into the trackpad. There are also a full HDMI slot, USB-C ports, and the regular ones.
Xiaomi manages to keep the front exterior minimalist. There is nothing wrong with minimalist designs especially for laptops designed for professional use. It feels more smooth and delicate at the same time. It’s also sturdy thanks to the all-metal body construction. Ventilation is moved to the back, this is important to regulate heat because a laptop keeps generating heat especially during intensive use. Overheating is serious issue, and when the ventilation is done right, this will eliminate the need for an extra cooler, like a cooling pad. Judging by the markings on the back, we can see that the notebook is compatible with Harman Infinity Speakers.
Although the Macbook Pro comparison draws a lot of attention, the display still lags behind the Macbook Pro’s Retina. That being said, it is not bad at all. The bezels surrounding the screen are thin, but a bit thicker at the bottom. We really appreciate the narrow frame design because it gives the Mi Pro a neat look. It looks sharp and has vivid colors. If it wasn’t for the reflection, it should’ve been a perfect screen. The extra ports can actually be a solution if the glossy effect really bothers you. Just hook up a second monitor to solve the issue. The screen covers 94% of the sRGB color gamut, making it an ideal laptop for Photoshop.
Keyboard and trackpad
The keyboard offers a fairly pleasant typing experience. The keys have good feedback, while the layout is comfortable. The only problem we have is the keys can be a bit too soft. The trackpad, on the other hand, is highly responsive to touch. Not just that, it’s also ample, so there’s much room to move your index finger inside it. Comparing it to the Macbook Pro’s trackpad might be a stretch, but it does its job well for the price point. It is very accurate, easily beats others in its class.
The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro incorporates Gen 8 core i5 / i7 (i7-8550u) processor. After several tests, it’s safe to say that the new processor is much better than the one in the previous model. The same goes for the graphics performance. It can achieve a score of 3194, which is on par with the Xiaomi Air. With these specs, the Pro should be appealing to gamers because it can handle various titles without a problem.
